The chronic nature of arthritis joint pain can make the life of a patient a real living hell, particularly since the joint deterioration is often accompanied by all sorts of other health issues including endocrine failure and a poor or deteriorated thyroid condition. Studies also indicate that people who experience arthritis joint pain could also have the androgen or estrogen glands inactive, which requires an immediate medial investigation. Together with arthritis all sorts of health issues arise owing to the failure of the various system functions. This is precisely the reason why arthritis is a condition associated most often with old age.

Arthritis joint pain can also result from the formation of a calcium or mineral deposit formed in an area that was repeatedly injured in the past. Once the deterioration of the bone starts it is pretty difficult to stop it, and it usually comes accompanied by swelling, skin irritation, loss of mobility and movement impairment in general. In the most advanced stages, arthritis could also cripple the joints, the reason for which it is even more pressing that you do not ignore the condition and do everything in your power to stop the evolution of the disease as such.

Regular treatments that are prescribed for normal occasional joint pain do not apply to arthritis cases since they cannot be used for longer periods of time and the range of adverse reactions that they trigger is too large. A solution of arthritis joint pain would consist in the natural stimulation of the regeneration of the joint cartilage. Not all patients have reported the same success level after the administration of mineral supplements. Amino sugars are generally considered great stimulants of the natural regenerative processes, but the response to the treatment differs from case to case. Talk to your health care provider for information and support in choosing a course of action.

Even if you have been suffering from arthritis joint pain for a long period of time, you should not give up hope on the premises that arthritis is an irrecoverable health condition. From patient to patient, pain alleviation may come from a different remedy: some will prefer warmth and massage sessions, other will go for pressure puncture and reflex stimulation. Whichever be the solution you favor, arthritis joint pain forces one to lead a continuous battle for personal comfort and well being. Regular medical checks are also recommended for the possible diagnosis of other health problems related to arthritis.

Tip! For the full picture on the origins of neck pain and how a healthy spine can accelerate your energy and guarantee your longevity, you can visit various web sites on the Internet that cater to answering these questions. Open up a whole new level of knowledge on your body and exactly how it works.

Unfortunately, anxiety is more than just a pain in the neck. Head and neck pains caused by anxiety can be a truly debilitating situation and what is worse than that is the fact that it is self inflicted. Of course, no one really wants to experience pain, especially the type of pain associated with head and neck pains associated with anxiety.

People who suffer from anxiety induced head and neck pains feel a constant ache in their neck with their nerves on end as well as a vice grip like hold on their heads. This sort of head and neck pain can go on for long periods of time without reprieve and will not go away with normal pain relievers because pain relievers subdue pain, not anxiety.

The reason that it is said that head and neck pains that result from anxiety are self inflicted because this is a classic case of a psycho somatic occasion where a mental state of mind has manifested itself physically. This is actually a natural way for the body to inform the mind if things that otherwise may stay in the subconscious. Perhaps, we are not aware that we are anxious or over indulging in a lifestyle that is prone to anxiety. The head and neck pain that result from anxiety alerts us to this fact so that we can do something about it set ourselves free from the physical as well as mental anguish.

Tip! As a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, I take a different approach to the treatment and prevention of neck pain. After a thorough neurological examination, I determine which part of the nervous system is not functioning properly.

An old wise saying says that, “anxiety is a payment in advance for a debt we may never owe”. We need to keep this adage in mind in instances where we tend to get agitated and anxious. To the person who is anxious, it may seem that anxiety, worry and stress are a natural reaction to stimuli but that need not be the case; unless one enjoys the stress compounded by severe head and neck pains.

Individuals who find themselves victims of head and neck pain from anxiety need to wake up to the realization that they will need to manage their stress and anxiety to be able to manage their physical pain. Do not put yourself I situations that will merit stress and challenge your peace of mind.

For sure, there will be things in life that will not go our way and cause us a huge amount of anxiety if we allow it. But the truth is simple. We are responsible for how we feel and decide how to act to given stimuli. We all know that life will constantly throw challenges our way and we will find ourselves in instances where it is impossible not to get stressed. However, we have the power to manage our stress levels and choose peace of mind rather than dwelling on stress.

Tip! Treatment relies on the reduction of the disc bulge by changing the mechanics of the spine and reducing the tension in the connective tissue with Connective Tissue Manipulation and Manual Lymph Drainage. Correct posture is very important to improve the neck pain and prevent recurrence.

Pain in the neck can be caused by irritation, inflammation, injury, or infection. Pain in the neck, shoulder, arm, hand or head “most” frequently results from irritation of cervical nerve roots in the region of the intervertebral foramen, encroachment of the vascular supply as it courses through the vertebral canal, or invasion of the cord in the spinal canal.

If unhealthy, the neck’s normal forward curve may reduce, become straight, or “military,” or even reverse its curve. Over time arthritic changes in the vertebrae such as lipping or spurring (bony growths); disc thinning or degeneration; or deterioration of muscles, ligaments and other structures may occur. In spite of all these changes, however, there may or may not be pain. In fact, studies show little or no correlation between the degree of pain felt in the neck and arthritis changes found on X-rays and MRI.

Tip! The Internet is flooded with neck-support pillows in various shapes, sizes and materials. Many of these pillows claim to promote better sleep, relieve neck pain and prevent episodes of stiff neck and frozen shoulder.

Lipping, spurring, and other irregularities (osteoarthritis) do not in themselves constitute a disease but are rather defense mechanisms that arise to stabilize an off-balance spine. Recent research has shown that manipulative care can reverse some of the effects of osteoarthritis - something that had previously been considered impossible.

As a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, I take a different approach to the treatment and prevention of neck pain. After a thorough neurological examination, I determine which part of the nervous system is not functioning properly. In many neck pain patients, I find a high mesencephalic output.

There are three parts to the brain stem: top, middle and lower. The mesencephalon is the top part of the brain stem. A high output of the mesencephalon will cause an increased pulse and heart rate, the inability to sleep, or a waking, fitful sleep. Other symptoms might include urinary tract infections, increased warmth and sweating, and sensitivity to light.

Along with a high mesencephalic output, the neck pain patient may present with a decreased output of the cerebellum. The cerebellum is in the back part of the brain. It controls all of the involuntary spinal musculature.

No matter what the condition, it is imperative that the chiropractic neurologist performs a thorough and comprehensive exam to determine the exact nature of the patient’s condition.

Tip! More recently some TENs machines are now available with an electrical probe which can be used to stimulate acupuncture points to bring pain relief. While almost all TENs machines have cautions about placing the electrode pads on the head and neck these accu TENs machines will permit users to stimulate the accu points or channels elsewhere on the body to bring relief to head or neck pain.

Many people that enter our facilities have at some time or currently are experiencing neck pain and or headaches. Today’s sedentary lifestyle, computers, phones, travel all force the head and shoulders forward of the bodies center of gravity. The average weight of the head is 10-12 pounds, for each inch that the head leans forward double the weight of the head, thats right, 20-24 pounds. Thats a lot of extra strain that the posterior stabilizers of the neck and back must deal with. As many have learned from being posturally assessed by a Precision Fitness trainer this can account for the headaches and shoulder stress that many of us feel.

Add to the equation car accidents, falls, and sporting injuries and there can be some major damage to the muscles of the neck. One thing that many people do not take into account is that many of the shoulder blade muscles have direct attachments into the cervical and upper thoracic spine. If these muscles are weak, the shoulders slump further and the cycle of poor posture and weak shoulder muscles continues.

Tip! The Internet is flooded with neck-support pillows in various shapes, sizes and materials. Many of these pillows claim to promote better sleep, relieve neck pain and prevent episodes of stiff neck and frozen shoulder.

For every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction. As the body rounds forward the anterior musculature becomes very tight and overactive. This means the chest, frontal neck and upper abdominal muscles get very tight and will not relax. As a result the shoulder blade muscles we discussed get weak and lengthen from the unrelenting pull of the frontal muscles. We must stretch the frontal muscles and strengthen the posterior muscles to have any chance of success. This means no chest presses, bicep curls or crunches for the first few weeks of exercise. Often the Trigger Points that develop need to be addressed through soft tissue techniques to shut down some of the overactive muscles and painful movement patterns that can develop. So your mom was correct, sit up and do not slouch.

When exercising try to never shrug your shoulders, keep your head up and chin slightly retracted/tucked. Perform pulling exercises more than you push and as always never be afraid to seek the advice of an exercise professional.

Tip! I saw the same osteopath for many things afterwards, as anyone with severe breathing difficulties would know all too well. Somehow, getting help for my back and neck pain was the start of my journey of self-help and complementary or alternative therapy.

Tip! It might surprise you to know that those of us who have regular or recurring neck pain likely have an underlying condition, most likely a spinal condition. The reason the spinal source of the problem is often overlooked is because our front line doctors are not normally trained in its diagnosis and treatment.

It is very important to be aware of how we move, use and take care our bodies. Following are a few ideas that will help you increase your awareness to what you are doing with your body that can create pain.

Reach for Objects in Your Physical Comfort Zone

Frequently I notice people reaching out of their comfort zone. Your comfort zone is the area you can retrieve an item without moving or extending any part of your body. It is the area located in front of and directly to the side of your body.

If you are going to retrieve an item from behind your body, get out of your chair or swivel your chair around. Never reach for something while extending your arms behind your body.

Notice where you have placed often used items such as your telephone, reference books, pens, binders, etc. Are they on your desk or on the credenza behind you? Do you find yourself shifting your body or slightly lifting yourself from your chair to reach these items?

Tip! As a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, I take a different approach to the treatment and prevention of neck pain. After a thorough neurological examination, I determine which part of the nervous system is not functioning properly.

Is your phone causing you to twist your body left or right when dialing numbers? Can you move everything closer towards you? Are you getting the picture?

Stop and think about what would be easier for you throughout the day. Be adventurous! Simple adjustments to your desk will create less angst during the day and you will feel much more productive and a lot more freedom! Not to mention much more comfortable!

Professional and Self Massage

Neck and shoulder tension can be relieved with massage. Since the body works together as a whole treat yourself to a professional full body massage from time to time. In this fast paced computer age massage is more of a necessity than a luxury.

Add a few drops of essential oil to a small bottle of sesame oil and then apply to the area you are going to massage. It will make it much easier to massage your muscles. Self massage is easy to do with many of the massage tools on the market.

Neck Stretches

Simple and gentle neck stretches to the left and right will help to ease built up tension and get the oxygen moving again. If your neck feels tight, massage it first and then gently stretch. Stretching works better when the muscles are warm. Do not stretch in a cold drafty room if you have tight muscles.

Rest Your Arms Down by Your Side

Do nothing for about 10 -15 seconds every 10 -15 minutes. Let your shoulders recover several times per hour for seconds rather than a few times a day for several minutes. It will be easier for your shoulders to recover from the intense computer work they have been doing.

Stand Up

Every hour take a break and rest your body. Intense computer work takes it toll on the body. Take a walk. Drink some water. Do a few shoulder shrugs to release tension and interrupt your office neighbors. Who knows? Maybe they need a rest break too!

Tip! Treatment relies on the reduction of the disc bulge by changing the mechanics of the spine and reducing the tension in the connective tissue with Connective Tissue Manipulation and Manual Lymph Drainage. Correct posture is very important to improve the neck pain and prevent recurrence.

What is neck pain? Where does it come from?

It might surprise you to know that those of us who have regular or recurring neck pain likely have an underlying condition, most likely a spinal condition. The reason the spinal source of the problem is often overlooked is because our front line doctors are not normally trained in its diagnosis and treatment.

The problem is that many front line health care practitioners do not know how to properly diagnose or treat this condition. In fact, the subluxation complex, which simply means a spinal bone or vertebrae has fallen out of alignment, is almost always overlooked when a patient is first examined by their physician for neck pain.

The subluxation complex is more likely to be properly diagnosed and effectively treated in your chiropractor’s office than in any other health care practitioners office, leading to mistreatment and unsuccessful treatment where simple chiropractic work would have resolved the situation.

The simple truth is that a full spinal exam by a practicing chiropractor should begin in the early years, but many adults shy away from taking spinal health seriously. By the time regular symptoms exist, it is likely that the subluxation complex or associated similar spinal condition has set in.

A full spinal exam including x- rays is essential to promoting and maintaining good spinal health and preventing arthritis. Ignoring spinal problems or limiting your care to only the mainstream medical world often turns out to be a pathway to continuing spinal decay and continuing degeneration of the condition itself.

Tip! The problem is that many front line health care practitioners do not know how to properly diagnose or treat this condition. In fact, the subluxation complex, which simply means a spinal bone or vertebrae has fallen out of alignment, is almost always overlooked when a patient is first examined by their physician for neck pain.

Neck pain is a common and costly medical ailment. Few studies of really effective medical treatments exist compared with those, say, for low back pain.

Many drugs used in clinical practice have been tried. Among those are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), tricyclic antidepressants, neuroleptic agents, and opioid analgesics.

While uncontrolled studies show benefit, controlled studies are lacking. So what has been shown to work so far? According to a recent study, there are only two medicines that have been proven to be effective. The first is intravenous methylprednisolone for acute whiplash used within eight hours for whiplash and the second is intramuscular lidocaine for chronic mechanical neck disorders. (Peloso PM, Gross AR, Haines TA, et al. Medicinal and injection therapies for mechanical neck disorders: a Cochrane systemic Review. J Rheum 2006; 33:957-967).

What is disheartening is that the usual treatments such as anti-inflammatory drugs and acetaminophen have been largely ineffective- at least according to this one large study.

Even epidural injections were classified as showing “limited evidence of benefit.”

A number of interventions in this large study were ineffective. These include:

	Oral psychotropic agents
Oral anti-inflammatory agents and oral analgesics
	Intramuscular injections of multivitamins.
	Nerve-block injections

Tip! For severe acute neck pain resulting from an accident or injury, doctors recommend bed rest, a neck brace or collar, and cold treatment (such as an ice pack) for neck pain relief. Heat (such as that from a heating pad) and physical therapy are usually recommended for treating chronic neck pain.

In addition, several interventions were judged to have shown “moderate evidence of no benefit.” These included intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin (Botox A), intracutaneous injections of sterile water, subcutaneous injection of carbon dioxide and melatonin.

So what can you do if you’re a patient?

First of all, remember that these studies that are published in the literature have flaws. They do not report the data from private practices. Also, many of the studies that are reported as being “negative” are done in large medical centers where there is already a built in bias that these treatments don’t work. It’s sad but true. A lot of academic doctors really don’t believe in treatment. They’d rather write negative papers.

Second, make sure you see a skilled rheumatologist… one who is skilled in the management of osteoarthritis and neck problems.

The things that might afford some relief in addition to the two described above are also- at least in my 25 years of experience are:

	Physical therapy for chronic problems
	Chiropractic for acute problems
	A neck support pillow
	Ice/ moist heat
	Gentle traction
Exercises done under the supervision of a skilled therapist
A soft cervical collar worn temporarily
Epidural, nerve block, and soft tissue injections (despite what they say, I think they work)

Tip! On March 29, 1996, the Food and Drug Administration bestowed the Class 2 status of ‘medical tools’ to acupuncture needles. Acupuncture needles were previously listed under Class 3, or ‘experimental devices.

Arthritis pain has never been easy to treat and arthritis symptoms have often been managed by the use of possibly toxic or unpalatable arthritis medication. Acupuncture can result in powerful arthritis pain relief and it can provide an alternative arthritis remedy for many pain sufferers. Arthritis treatment by acupuncture is described below.

Arthritis pain relief with acupuncture - what is acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been used for arthritis pain relief in traditional Chinese medicine for many thousands of years. It has recently become a widely used technique in western medicine - both by doctors and others.

Acupuncture claims good results in the treatment of arthritis pain. Arthritis pain relief and joint pain relief are among the most common reasons for using acupuncture in Western countries. Many people who suffer from osteoathritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, degenerative arthritis and gout seek pain relief from acupuncture - either alongside, or instead of, their arthritis medication or other arthritis treatment.

Tip! The general theory of acupuncture is based on the assumption that there are patterns of energy flow (Qi) through the body that are essential for health. The disturbances or disruptions in this flow are responsible for health diseases.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into several points around the body. These acupuncture points are often near to the site of your arthritis pain and may be very tender to touch before the needle is inserted. Other acupuncture points used for arthritis pain relief may be quite a way distant from the affected joint - acupuncturists usually call these areas “distal points.” It depends on the particular style of practice used by your acupuncturists but you should expect to have anything between two and twenty needles inserted each time you go for treatment

Most arthritis pain sufferers need from three to six treatment sessions before they begin to get relief.
The needles are extremely fine - not much wider than a human hair - and are often left in your skin for more than twenty minutes during a treatment session.

Tip! But one promising method, which is often disregarded, is acupuncture. Personal stories of tinnitus patients, who are treated with acupuncture, show that this method of treatment can be a reasonable alternative in comparison with orthodox medicine.

There is no way to predict how much arthritis pain relief you will get from acupuncture - it really is a matter of try it and see what happens.

How is acupuncture used in arthritis pain relief?

Your first acupuncture session may last about an hour and subsequent appointments are often shorter in length. From two to twenty very thin needles are put in place and left there for several minutes. Having needles stuck in your body may not sound like fun but most people say there’s only a slight stinging sensation as the needles enter, and no pain at all after that. Your therapist may stimulate the needles by turning or rotating them quickly during your treatment session.

Acupuncture needles are very thin and solid with a smooth point and having them inserted may not be as uncomfortable as getting an immunisation having blood taken for a blood test. The number of sessions needed varies. Long-standing and complex chronic pain problems like arthritis might need one or two treatments a week for several months.

Most people do not experience side effects from acupuncture therapy but a few of us can have problems such as bleeding or infection. Some people who have never experienced acupuncture may feel dizzy after their first acupuncture treatment.

Tip! Acupuncture Improves Sperm Count? It is important to note that statistics show at least 30% of infertility cases are caused by male factors and another 30% involve a combination of both male and female. A recent study indicates that acupuncture improves sperm count, motility and quality.

If you suffer from arthritis then do consider trying acupuncture - it may provide the arthritis pain relief that you have been longing for.

Because modern acupuncture needles are disposable and used only once, there is no risk of transmitting infections from one person to another.

Tip! I saw the same osteopath for many things afterwards, as anyone with severe breathing difficulties would know all too well. Somehow, getting help for my back and neck pain was the start of my journey of self-help and complementary or alternative therapy.

By Mark FranklinAfter teaching chair yoga for several years Liz Franklin can testify that it appropriate for almost anyone, even if they are feeling the effects of aging or have physical limitations. It is not for hard-bodied 20-somethings that can twist themselves into poses that look impossible - the only prerequisite is that you can sit in a chair, including a wheelchair.

What better way to illustrate how chair yoga has benefited those unable to attend a traditional yoga class than to tell it in their own words?

Hi! I’m Sherri Evert. I’m a 63-year old retired business partner. I began practicing chair yoga in March. I have been practicing yoga for many years. I have issues with my back and found most other classes to be strictly a physical exercise. If I couldn’t achieve the “perfect pose” I felt as thought I wasn’t doing it right.

Tip! Several factors can contribute to neck pain. Symptoms may be the result of bad posture at a computer in the workplace, or a neck trauma.

I noticed the classes when I was seeing an acupuncturist for arthritis in my neck. I had been in constant pain for some time and was willing to try almost anything to get relief. While acupuncture offered relief, it was only temporary. When I was leaving the acupuncture office one day I noticed a group of smiling women leaving their yoga class. I thought I would feel comfortable with this group as they were close to my age. I wanted to see if my own body could fix the neck pain with help from yoga.

Within 2 months of practicing chair yoga my neck pain was gone. I also had problems with low back pain and had tried numerous options to cure this as well. The relaxation portion of the classes and videos released the pain. I am much more aware of my posture now. In class Liz helps us visualize our bodies in the posture and makes us aware of the benefits. I now use the yoga poses I have learned in class along with the videos as a personal “tool box” for taking care of my body. I have definitely gained strength in my arms and legs as well.

Tip! Pain management doctors are specialists at diagnosing the reasons for your pain as well as treating the pain itself. Arthritis, back and neck pain, cancer pain, nerve pain, migraine headaches, shingles, and phantom limb pain for amputees are among the most common pain problems they usually manage.

I truly appreciate the way Liz works so hard to help us achieve a mind/body/spirit connection in her classes. The meditative experience of her classes carries through my day. I try to attend two of her classes each week and use her videos when I can’t be in class in person. I feel as though the class is meditation in motion and I also have enjoyed the sense of community that is part of her class experience. She works to help us be present in the moment. She also lets us know what the benefits of each pose are which helps us understand why we are doing the poses.

If you are thinking about joining a class or purchasing (some) videos be assured that the hour you put in that you didn’t think you had time for will give back multiple benefits including higher energy levels, a calm mind and a peaceful spirit. You will be glad you did this for yourself and the benefits will spill over into your whole circle of family and friends.”

Tip! A recent European study divided patients into three groups for treatment. The group that received traditional Chinese acupuncture reported the most significant neck pain relief in the short term and over time, compared with those that underwent massage therapy or laser treatment.

Tip! But one promising method, which is often disregarded, is acupuncture. Personal stories of tinnitus patients, who are treated with acupuncture, show that this method of treatment can be a reasonable alternative in comparison with orthodox medicine.

The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture has proven to be an effective treatment for tension headache. It not only relieves pain, but also cuts rates of recurrence by almost half, a recent study indicates.

Traditional Chinese acupuncture therapy involves insertion of needles up to 3 inches deep into the body at prescribed acupuncture points, according to licensed acupuncturist Rong Zeng of the New York Good Health Clinic in Manhattan.

However, a new, randomized blind study in Germany involving 270 patients with a similar severity of tension headache has shown that a minimal course of acupuncture works almost as well as the traditional method.

Fewer Headaches After Treatment

Researchers divided the patients into three groups. Over an eight-week period, one group was treated with traditional acupuncture, another received minimal acupuncture (needles inserted only superficially into the skin at non-acupuncture points), and the control group had neither treatment.

Tip! It is believed that the earliest acupuncture needles were sharp pieces of bone or flint called bian stones. Early acupuncture needles were made from iron, copper, bronze, and even silver or gold.

The subjects were monitored for four weeks after their period of treatment. Those who had received traditional acupuncture care subsequently experienced seven fewer headaches. The group that had been given minimal acupuncture therapy had surprisingly similar results — 6.6 fewer headaches.

The control group did not fare as well, with only 1.5 fewer headaches.

Improvements in headache rates continued for months after the acupuncture treatment, though they began to rise slightly as time went on.

Results Subject to Interpretation

Such a negligable difference in results between traditional and minimal acupuncture treatments possibly indicates that the location of acupuncture points and depth of needle insertion do not make a major difference for treatment of tension headache, the authors of the study suggest.

However, they caution that the possibility of placebo effects should not be overlooked.

“Placebo effect is a factor in all types of medicine,” Dr. Zeng noted. In western medicine, for example, blind tests may reveal placebo effects that are similar to responses to trial drugs, she explained.

Tip! The Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine or ACAOM is the one that accredits an acupuncture school. If you seek for excellence in acupuncture studies, it would be best to enroll in an acupuncture school accredited by ACAOM.

In any case, it is clear that the patients who received acupuncture treatment experienced fewer headaches. The possibility that placebo effect plays a role in acupuncture does not detract from its efficacy.

“If you have to deal with chronic neck pain, it can be a real struggle. I know because I’ve had to do it myself,” states Dr. Nathan Wei, a board-certified rheumatologist and Clinical Director of The Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland.

How arthritis causes neck pain…
The neck is an interesting structure. It’s made up of 7 bones stacked on top of each other. Each is separated from each other in the front by fibrous cushions called discs, and from each other in the back by special joints called facet joints. “The maximum movement of the neck occurs between the 4th and 6th cervical vertebrae…and this is where the most wear and tear in arthritis is seen,” says Dr. Wei

Pain can come from anywhere!
Dr Wei adds, “ anything in the rear part of the brain can cause referred pain to the neck. This includes aneurysms, infections, and tumors.

Also, neck pain can be referred from the shoulder, the upper chest, or even the heart! Problems in the soft tissues of the neck such as growths or tumors affecting the thyroid gland, esophagus (food pipe) or trachea (wind pipe) can also lead to neck pain

Tip! Pain management doctors are specialists at diagnosing the reasons for your pain as well as treating the pain itself. Arthritis, back and neck pain, cancer pain, nerve pain, migraine headaches, shingles, and phantom limb pain for amputees are among the most common pain problems they usually manage.

Injury to the muscles and ligaments (example= whiplash auto accident) can cause neck pain. Dr. Wei declares, “This is the type of problem I have had for many years. I’ve been rear-ended a few times and I have degenerative arthritis in the neck at the C5-6 level. Patients I have talked with agree with me when I report popping or grinding in the neck with movement. Other patients say it “feels like sand back there” when they move their head”

Pain from whiplash can radiate up the back of the head and cause headache. It may also radiate into the shoulders or between the shoulder blades.

Tip! Several factors can contribute to neck pain. Symptoms may be the result of bad posture at a computer in the workplace, or a neck trauma.

Dr. Wei also adds, “Some types of neck pain are dangerous. When neck problems are associated with pressure on the spinal cord, this is called myelopathy and is a neurosurgical emergency!”

What are the most effective treatments?
Treatment obviously depends on making the correct diagnosis. According to Dr. Wei, the goals of treatment are to relieve pain, improve range of motion, prevent weakening of muscles, and restore function. Among the common treatments are non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory medicines or NSAIDS, topical agents such as Myorx, soft neck collars, neck support pillows, and exercises. Dr. Wei firmly reminds us, “ evidence of instability or cord compression is a ticket to see the neurosurgeon stat”

Dr. Wei (pronounced “way”) is a board-certified rheumatologist and Clinical Director of the nationally respected Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and has served as a consultant to the Arthritis Branch of the National Institutes of Health. He is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians.

Obesity is a state of being obese, or overweight due to excessive accumulation of fat. The love for junk food and lethargy has played a great part in spreading this disease. Nowadays, not only adults but also children are suffering from the problem of excessive weight.

Some of the effective remedies for weight loss include exercise, yoga, crash diet and acupuncture.

In the recent years, acupuncture has gained wide acclaim as an effective therapy to control and lose excess weight. Acupuncture is a healing system that was developed in china some 2,500 years ago. Acupuncture was introduced in America in the late 1800s. Since than it has been used as an alternative medicine to treat a wide range of diseases including depression, insomnia, drug abuse and weight loss. However, it did not come into popularity until President Nixon made his historical visit to China in 1972. That is the event that largely opened the door from East to West and vice-versa.

Tip! The FDA ruling indicates that acupuncture is a safe and effective medical treatment. Because modern acupuncture needles are disposable and used only once, there is no risk of transmitting infections from one person to another.

There are about 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body. Each point is associated with different healing attributes. Acupuncture points within the year are tapped for detoxification and weight loss. The organs treatable by ear acupuncture, for example, include the lung, kidneys, liver and nervous system.

But before deciding to go for acupuncture as a remedy for your weight loss, be sure to make sure you are using a reputable weight loss practitioner. If treated by an expert practitioner, acupuncture can be an easy way out to free you from the shackles of excessive fat accumulated in your body.

Tip! Functionality and success of acupuncture is something not known to many people. In our body, many channels of energies flow in regular patterns.

Tip! The problem is that many front line health care practitioners do not know how to properly diagnose or treat this condition. In fact, the subluxation complex, which simply means a spinal bone or vertebrae has fallen out of alignment, is almost always overlooked when a patient is first examined by their physician for neck pain.

I stumbled across TMJ when I needed treat a literal pain in the neck that would not go away. It seemed that the pain in my neck came from my jaws. “TMJ” refers to disorders of the jaw muscles and of the temporomandibular joint, the hinge at the side of the head that joins the lower jaw, mandible, to the temporal bone of the skull. TMJ expert John Taddey, D.D.S. states that one the most common symptoms of TMJ is a dull, aching pain around the ears which can radiate to the neck, shoulders, and back of the head. These symptoms may be coupled with tenderness of the jaw muscles and a headache.

While the causes of TMJ are many, the condition is usually the result of a collective malfunctioning of the chewing muscles, the teeth, and the temporomandibular joint. The face and jaw muscles may go into spasm or cramp and lead to tissue damage, pain and tenderness. The level of damage and pain varies.

Tip! Along with a high mesencephalic output, the neck pain patient may present with a decreased output of the cerebellum. The cerebellum is in the back part of the brain.

Diaganosing TMJ can be elusive. Recognizing TMJ requires a thorough understanding of the two-inch area just in front of the ears that houses the temporomandibular joint, sinuses, glands, the middle and inner ears, throat tissues, brain tissue, muscles, ligaments, nerves blood vessels, lymphatic tissues, bones and teeth. TMJ can mask itself with a “referred pain”. This occurs when pain felt in one area of the body originated from another source. For example, you may visit your doctor with an earache and find your ear is healthy, while a decayed tooth or TMJ is the root cause of the earache.

TMJ can arise form trauma, whiplash, stress, teeth-grinding and clenching, misaligned teeth, missing or sore teeth, muscle abuse, infection, diseases of the joints such as arthritis, and cancer.

Your family dentist should be able to recognize TMJ. Depending on your condition, she may treat the TMJ herself or refer you to a physician, orthodontist, chiropractor, psychologist or oral surgeon for more specialized treatment.

For more information on identifying and treating TMJ yourself, read TMJ Self-Help Program: How to recognize a TMJ problem: What to do to relieve pain and restore health: When to seek professional help by John Taddely, D.D.S. with Constance Schrader and James Dillon.

Tip! While science will continue to study the so-called efficacy of acupuncture and depression, the bottom line is that acupuncture has been used successfully on a wide range of health conditions for thousands of years. The proof is in the many anecdotal stories told by happy patients.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing approach that is almost 3500 years old. It is based on the belief that chi, a vital energy force flows around 12 key channels around the body. Within these channels there are 365 acupuncture points, which can sometimes become blocked’ preventing the smooth flow of the vital energy, resulting in degrading health.

Acupuncture is a highly effective method for treating all manner of addictions including nicotine. The application of acupuncture to help you stop and eventually quit altogether, involves the insertion of very fine needles into special points on the skin. The needles are generally left in the skin for up to 20mins. There is virtually no pain apart from the slight pricking sensation when the needle first goes in. The technique itself results in the release of special chemicals called endorphins which will provide a natural high’ at the end of the treatment.

Following the first treatment, the patient is likely to cough up phlegm during the week after treatment as the body starts to adjust to life without smoking, and the tar and phlegm in the lungs starts to loosen. It is common to schedule a follow up session about 1 week after the first to assess progress, and decide whether further therapy is required. Many heavy smokers have reported success after only 1 or 2 acupuncture sessions.

Acupuncture as a method for quitting smoking is best for those individuals that are heavily addicted to the nicotine, but have clearly made the commitment to quit. This type of therapy will dramatically reduce the side effects of nicotine withdrawal, such as the cravings, depression and anxiety. The body will also start to repair itself, particularly in improving blood circulation and de-congesting the lungs, and the patient will generally feel very positive and optimistic as a result of the release of natural anti-depressants by the brain.

Tip! To really understand how acupuncture works, it is necessary to become familiar with the basics of Chinese philosophy that underlines the essence of the theory of acupuncture. The way it has gained popularity in the developing and developed countries in the past forty years, it may ultimately prove to be a very important vehicle for maintaining good health and well-being.

Combining acupuncture with more traditional approaches to quitting smoking can be an effective strategy, especially if you have tried and failed at simply using willpower to quit in the past. If you decide acupuncture to stop smoking is for you, make sure you see a qualified and reputable practitioners.

Acupuncture is something they are passionate about.

Acupuncture is a highly effective quit smoking method for all, and specially for those people who had been unsuccessful with other methods to stop smoking. People who go for acupuncture treatments are usually keen on quit smoking beliefs. Although they have failed with all previous programs, this 3500 years old Chinese remedy promises quick relief from chronic smoking habits.

Acupuncture works most effectively on human body to reduce chronic smoking habits

Acupuncture is based on the belief that “chi”, a vital energy force flows through 12 key channels around the body. Within these channels, there are at least 365 acupuncture points, which can sometimes get blocked preventing the smooth flow of vital energy, thereby leading to chronic habits. Acupuncture for stop quit smoking does not involve any “magic” acupuncture points. At least five needles are taken and inserted into the ear [particularly in the cartilage and not in the ear canal] and a few on the hands and wrists. With the needles pricked to your skin, you are left to relax for 30 to 45 minutes. These pricked needles provide significant effect on lessening cravings for smoking.

Tip! In the recent years, acupuncture has gained wide acclaim as an effective therapy to control and lose excess weight. Acupuncture is a healing system that was developed in china some 2,500 years ago.

Treatments involved in acupuncture

To become a non-smoker, you have to follow a series of sessions. These sessions also focus on physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms occurring in the patient during the acupuncture treatments. While the needle-pricking treatments are going on you are also advised to undergo treatments with herbs. You can apply a mixture of oil of cloves and wintergreen, extracts of evodia fruits and Sichuan lovage rhizomes in the acupuncture points to get faster stop smoking results.

Other advantages of acupuncture - tips on stopping smoking

Acupuncture tips on stopping smoking not only relieve you from permanent smoking cessation but also works advantageous for you. After the acupuncture series is over, even cigarettes taste foul. It takes a nasty burnt taste and you can thus proudly redefine yourself as a “non-smoker”. While the body actually improves in blood circulation and de-congesting the lungs, you also start feeling truly optimistic.

Tip! It is believed that the earliest acupuncture needles were sharp pieces of bone or flint called bian stones. Early acupuncture needles were made from iron, copper, bronze, and even silver or gold.

Tip! As a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, I take a different approach to the treatment and prevention of neck pain. After a thorough neurological examination, I determine which part of the nervous system is not functioning properly.

Neck pain afflicts many people at some point in their life - two-thirds of American adults report having experienced at least one incidence of neck pain in their lives. You can strain your neck during exercise, at work, or even something as simple as turning over in your sleep. It’s an ailment so common that it has even earned it’s own colloquialism. But while your boss, neighbor, or even children can all be a real “pain in the neck” sometimes, so can the pain in your neck!

So how do you get rid of it? There are many treatments for neck pain relief, ranging from at-home remedies and physical therapy to alternative treatments like chiropractic and acupuncture. Over-the-counter and prescription medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) can alleviate pain, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory aids (NSAIDS) reduce inflammation too. Surgery may be necessary to correct a displaced cervical disc.

Tip! *When sleeping, bring your own pillows - one that supports your lower back, and one that wraps around your neck preventing your head from flopping around and causing neck pain (inflatable pillows make for easier portability).

Deciding which therapy to undergo depends on factors like pain intensity and duration.

Physical therapy should address risk factors and preventative care along with providing neck pain relief. This may involve massage, electrical stimulation, stretching, exercise, or other modalities.

A recent European study divided patients into three groups for treatment. The group that received traditional Chinese acupuncture reported the most significant neck pain relief in the short term and over time, compared with those that underwent massage therapy or laser treatment.

Whether you choose massage, acupuncture, or physical therapy, it is important to find a certified professional whose skill you are confident in - any of these performed incorrectly can actually do more harm than good. Don’t be afraid to try new therapies or combine several types of treatment together - your neck is unique, and your treatment can be too.

Tip! Sujok Acupuncture the acupuncture schools offers this unique technique where the expert uses only his hands and legs. He inserts microscopic needles into the points or even a sesame seed and small magnets that relieve the patients instantly.

Acupuncture is an alternative medical method that originated from China. This method is based upon the old Chinese assumption that there are invisible energy point scattered across the human body. Theses energy points are called Meridians. during an Acupuncture treatment, tiny needles are inserted into the Meridians, causing he energy flow through them to change. This principle is used for quit a few benefits:

* It can “open up” energy blocks that will relieve pain and stress
* It can reduce cravings
* It can strengthen your energy and vitality

In the past years, Acupuncture has been used, among other uses, to help people stop smoking. The treatment included inserting the needles to specific points (among them, a few points in the outer ear). This treatment was supposed to reduce the cravings to another cigarette and help those people on their way to quit smoking. In the first few years of using this method, it was quit popular and gained a lot of followers that recommended it. That was mainly because the method is not invasive and is very suitable for people who can’t, or won’t take medicine and other “strong stuff”. But, for the last few years, the use of Acupuncture in smoking cessation has reduced significantly. This happens because of the following reasons:

Tip! Although there are many who would doubt the effectiveness of acupuncture, once they are a patient, they are believers. It has been proposed that acupuncture works and produces its effects through regulating the nervous system.

* The percentage of people who actually stooped smoking while using Acupuncture
was small. This indicated that Acupuncture is not the best choice for people who want to quit smoking.

* New solutions were introduced to the scene, such as laser treatment, and shots treatment. This article does not discuss these methods, so let’s just say that they proved to be by far more effective than Acupuncture.

To conclude, It is clear that Acupuncture has it’s place as an alternative method, and many people report getting results with it. If you want to give it a shot in your efforts to stop smoking, it is advised that you find a therapist with a proven back record of success with helping people stop smoking. However, I would say that as a means to help smoking cessation, there are much better solutions out there, so Acupuncture is in my opinion not the best choice.

Tip! With acupuncture’s more than 3000-year history, it’s hard to negate its healing or therapeutic effects. And thus, even up to this day, a lot of people support this traditional medicinal practice.

So you want to quit smoking for good? Get all the

Tip! Although there are many who would doubt the effectiveness of acupuncture, once they are a patient, they are believers. It has been proposed that acupuncture works and produces its effects through regulating the nervous system.

Acupuncture is here for long time. Its authenticity is still a debatable issue. But the recent study that the acupuncture can dramatically lower blood pressure. According to this study, when low level of electrical stimulation was given at specific points on the front legs of rats lower the elevation in blood pressure. This study provides a setting stage for large-scale trails on humans and another option for healthcare practitioner treating high blood pressure patients. This study proves that acupuncture can be an excellent complements to other medical treatments, especially those treating high blood pressure problems.

Tip! Visit traditional chinese medicines or infertility and traditional chinese medicine or acupuncture schools for more information on acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

This study cans convince the so far unconvinced Weston world that acupuncture can also lower blood pressure. This research will ultimately integrate acupuncture healing into medical treatments for lowering the blood pressure. Team of researchers performed both manual and electro acupuncture. All the activities in both manual and electro acupuncture were performed. They used all the methods available and also changed the variables. Results of both manual and electro acupuncture showed immediate and prolonged lowering of cardiovascular blood pressure. However blood pressure remains lower for 10 minutes longer with electro acupuncture. Results in electro acupuncture are achieved normally with lower frequency. Result ranges between 44 and 39 % respectively. Combined stimulation of both the sets has caused no extra additive effect on the lowering of blood pressure.

Acupuncture is available with many variable techniques; therefore this study provides a greater opportunity to understand the different type of acupuncture techniques.

Acupuncture treatment is found to successful on only patients with hypertension (high blood pressure) and has no effect on the healthy patient. Goal of this study is to establish a standard of acupuncture treatment that can benefit everyone, who has high blood pressure and other cardiac ailments.

Tip! Sujok Acupuncture the acupuncture schools offers this unique technique where the expert uses only his hands and legs. He inserts microscopic needles into the points or even a sesame seed and small magnets that relieve the patients instantly.

Therefore acupuncture has established itself for being able to lower blood pressure. Thus acupuncture provides a big hope in the treatment of patients with cardiac disorders.

Tip! The needles employed by acupuncturists today are stainless steel, solid (unlike standard needles used for drawing blood which are hollow) and vary in size or width gauge. Acupuncture needles consist of a stainless steel shaft and a handle made out of copper or steel.

Tinnitus can be considered as a widespread disease. Millions of people worldwide suffer in tinnitus.

But what is tinnitus? - Tinnitus is defined in medicine as ringing or buzzing in the ears. The sounds, which only patients can hear, can have a lot of different forms like high-frequency ringing or low-frequency buzzing. All kind of noises are imaginable. For people, who suffer in tinnitus, this is of course often very bothering and affects the person’s life considerably.

Causes for tinnitus are very manifold. Mostly tinnitus is caused by an extreme noise pollution. For example loud music in discotheques or at a rock concert is a quite common cause. But also psychological problems like stress can lead to tinnitus.

So to be able to cure tinnitus at first it is necessary to find the causes for it and to eliminate these causes. Only then a therapy can be promising. There are lots of different methods of treatment for tinnitus. However, every patient will react on them differently and so it is not possible to describe one method which will always help.

But one promising method, which is often disregarded, is acupuncture. Personal stories of tinnitus patients, who are treated with acupuncture, show that this method of treatment can be a reasonable alternative in comparison with orthodox medicine. In ear acupuncture special points at the patient’s ears are treated with needles. Normally such a treatment lasts for several months. But in most cases at least a decrease of the bothering noise is recognisable. Often it can be cured totally.

Tip! While science will continue to study the so-called efficacy of acupuncture and depression, the bottom line is that acupuncture has been used successfully on a wide range of health conditions for thousands of years. The proof is in the many anecdotal stories told by happy patients.

So a treatment of tinnitus with acupuncture should always be considered and discussed with an ear specialist.

Tip! Acupuncture Improves Sperm Count? It is important to note that statistics show at least 30% of infertility cases are caused by male factors and another 30% involve a combination of both male and female. A recent study indicates that acupuncture improves sperm count, motility and quality.

I started having back pains a few years ago. The kind that shoot down your leg and make it difficult to walk. The doctors first tried physical therapy and I tried some Chiropractors on my own and nothing seemed to help. I would have occasional relief, but it always seemed to come back. The next thing the doctors did was send me for an MRI. This showed that I had a herniated disc between the L4 and L5 vertebrae. Their first solution was to inject cortisone into my spine and that’s when I started looking for alternatives. I had heard that many people would get these injections that would cover up the pain for a while but then later on they would end up injuring themselves further.

One day, my back tensed up worse than before and I could not stand straight up. Any of you who have had back pain will be able to relate to this: I had to walk stooped over a little bit and every time I extended my left leg it pinched the nerve and made every step painful. I got pretty good at swinging my hips and stepping out instead of stepping forward to minimize that pain, but it was time to do something.

Tip! Although acupuncture has been an accepted form of treatment, for many years, it still involves a certain amount of risks. A hematoma or nerve damage could occur, if the wrong body parts are punctured.

A friend of mine had had some acupuncture done before and I decided to give it a try. I walked in, in pain, and walked out standing straight up and walking normal. I was sold. If acupuncture is done right, it is very relaxing and at times I have almost fallen asleep during a session. Please note that acupuncture is actually good for treating many types of aches and pains, not just back pain.

Tip! Some of the effective remedies for weight loss include exercise, yoga, crash diet and acupuncture.

Here is what you can expect from an acupuncture session: You can typically get undressed to a level you are comfortable with. The acupuncturist will then place needles in specific points on your body depending upon your problem areas. These points may or may not be anywhere near your pain. For example, during my sessions for back pain, the acupuncturist has placed needles in my hands, feet, legs and back. The needles they use are very small and each one is individually sealed. Many people may tell you that the needles don’t hurt at all, and most of the time that is true. Occasionally, a needle will find a hot spot and it can feel like a fire. Just let the acupuncturist know if it is beyond uncomfortable pain.

Sometimes these hot spots will lead to greater pain relief later on. During my first few sessions for my back pain, my worst hot spot was my right hand; it hurt about as bad as my back did earlier. However, I can walk upright and deal with pain in my hand; not with it my back. I was able to massage my hand and work out the pain so it was definitely worth it. After the needles are in, the acupuncturist will leave and let you relax for 20 to 30 minutes. Depending upon your acupuncturist, they may apply herbs or heat the needles slightly or give a slight twist to the needle. Then the needles come out. You will have to fight the urge to tighten up when they are pulling the needles out. It is better to relax as much as possible and not think about it. Some acupuncturists may also give a slight massage with the acupuncture.

Because modern acupuncture needles are disposable and used only once, there is no risk of transmitting infections from one person to another.

So how am I doing now? Well, it has been over 5 years now, I think, and I never had to have a cortisone shot and never even thought about any kind of surgery. I still have occasional pain and have actually found a Chiropractor that is also a licensed acupuncture provider. He has a table that applies negative pressure to the discs in the spine and helps alleviate any associated pain. I still receive an occasional acupuncture treatment from him as well. Please note that I do not like “cracking” and my chiropractor has not “adjusted” my spine, only stretched it. I think the key to a healthy back with a herniated disc is to provide yourself with the ability to stretch out and strengthen your back without pain. Acupuncture and specific chiropractic treatments can be the way you accomplish this.

Acupuncture, a procedure that invites healing through stimulation of anatomical locations on or in the skin, evolved out of Chinese medicine over 2500 years ago. There are a variety of approaches to diagnosis and treatment in American acupuncture that incorporates medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries. The most studied mechanism of stimulation of acupuncture points employs penetration of the skin by thin needles, which are manipulated manually or by electrical stimulation.

It is believed that the earliest acupuncture needles were sharp pieces of bone or flint called bian stones. Early acupuncture needles were made from iron, copper, bronze, and even silver or gold. During the Iron and Bronze Ages, metal acupuncture needles began to surface. However, it is not unusual for contemporary acupuncturists to employ gold acupuncture needles to treat certain ailments.

The needles employed by acupuncturists today are stainless steel, solid (unlike standard needles used for drawing blood which are hollow) and vary in size or width gauge. Acup
